Year 1

Welcome to Year 1.  We are lucky enough to be based in classrooms which back onto the Key Stage 1 field, affording direct access to outdoor learning.

Year 1 is made up of Owls and Robins classes.  Miss Clifton is the class teacher for Owls, supported by Ms Taylor - Teaching Assistant (TA) and Mrs Smart Teaching Assistant (TA).   Mrs Anderson is the class teachers for Robins, supported by Mrs Thorpe- Trainee Teacher.

In Year 1 we aim to build on the children’s experiences from Reception, ensuring that they continue to have opportunities to learn through play as well as more formal aspects of learning.

A lot of the children’s learning comes through role play, with a corner of the classroom set aside.

We continue to share many picture books with the children and also look to focus on a specific topic across a fortnight so the children can really be immersed within the story. The children are given many opportunities to use all their senses in their learning through practical activities and make links with other areas of the curriculum, like making fruit kebabs for the story of Handa’s Surprise and making houses for The Three Little Pigs.

We have many exciting topics including looking at Toys & Games and Castles & Homes.  It’s always great to see the awe and wonder etched on the faces of the children when they see the toys that we used to play with as kids!  Barnaby Bear helps us teach about places at home and abroad including looking at forms of travel and the weather as well as maps and naming continents and oceans.

A lot of time is spent considering what it means to be healthy and also how to manage oneself including learning how to take praise and criticism; celebrating differences and so much more.

There are plenty of opportunities for physical activity including learning skills to play games; dance; gymnastics and music aplenty.

A more detailed breakdown of what our curriculum covers can be found from the following link.   If at any time you have any questions about what is covered, please speak to the class teacher.
