Year 2

Our classrooms offer direct access to the playground and Year 2 is the final year group of Key Stage 1.

Year 2’s classes are called Lions and Tigers.  Miss Zomparelli is Class Teacher for Lions and is supported by Mrs Thomas. Mrs Rahaman and Mrs Courthold are the Class Teachers for Tigers and are supported by Mrs Munson.

Year 2 is an exciting year in which your child will grow in confidence and become more independent.  In Year 2, we aim to challenge each child through a broad and creative curriculum. Subjects are covered through a variety of topics which include:

In Science:         Plants and Animals, Habitats, Healthy living,  Materials, Forces and Electricity
In RE:                  Festivals, Christianity and Islam
In History:          Seasides in the past, Remembrance Day,  The Great Fire of London,  Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole,
In Geography:   The seaside (physical and human features), Local, National and World maps

In Art:                  Mother Nature, The Seaside, Animals, Landscapes

A more detailed breakdown of what our curriculum covers can be found by  following this link.   If at any time you have any questions about what is covered, please speak to a class teacher. A termly newsletter goes into more detail about our curriculum.

Assessing your child’s progress happens all the time. However, at the end of Key Stage 1 your child will be assessed in reading, writing, maths and science, through a range of informal ongoing assessments and formal tests. Final Key Stage 1 assessments are primarily based on the teacher’s professional judgment of how your child has performed throughout the year and, though important, we always keep them low-key so as not to worry the children unnecessarily.

The children also enjoy learning beyond the classroom.  We have a range of trips such as to The British Wildlife Centre (Science: Plants and Animals), Bay Pond (Geography), and a theatre production visit.

Early in the year, the children experience a day ‘camping’ in school, which is always a highlight, even when it rains - what else would one expect for camping weather?!?

Towards the end of the year, we work closely with Key Stage 2 teachers to ensure that transition into Key Stage 2 is not a big change or worry.

We look forward to welcoming you to Year 2!
